Aurora

The stranded colony ship that arrived after the infection had already taken hold.

The Aurora is a colony ship that crash-landed on Planet 4546B approximately one to two years before the events of the main game. It serves as a central hub for mid-game exploration and provides critical exposition regarding the planet's existing dangers.

Lore & Background

Approximately one to two years before the player's arrival, the Aurora suffered a catastrophic failure during its descent onto Planet 4546B. The resulting crash left the massive vessel broken across the shallow reefs near what is now known as the Crash Site. Many crew members died in the impact, but some survivors did wake from cryosleep after the crash, only to face the planet's hazards.

The Kharaa bacterium was already present on the planet before the Aurora's arrival—the ship's cargo is not the original source of the outbreak. The logs found scattered throughout the wreckage detail the crew's desperate attempts to survive and communicate with Earth before succumbing to the planet's hostile environment and the pre-existing infection, ending in panic and death as the disease spread among the awakened survivors.

Today, the Aurora stands as a silent tomb and a resource cache for new survivors. Its hull is breached by water pressure and time, allowing access to vital crafting materials. However, the deeper sections remain dangerous, haunted by the lingering effects of the infection that predates this beacon of hope.

In Their Own Story

The silence here is heavy, broken only by the groan of metal settling on coral. Sunlight filters through the blue water in fractured beams, illuminating dust motes dancing around the shattered bridge window. A data pad floats unmoored, its screen dark, waiting for hands that will never come to read it. Outside, a school of jellyfish drifts past the torn hull plating, indifferent to the tragedy frozen beneath the waves.

Reader's Guide

The Aurora serves as the primary tutorial zone for new explorers, offering a safe introduction to underwater survival mechanics before venturing deeper into the ocean. Located in the Safe Shallows near the Crash Site, its massive white hull lies broken against the reef, accessible via multiple airlocks and breach points. Inside, players can scavenge essential early-game resources like titanium, copper ore, and lithium, which are crucial for crafting tools and vehicles to sustain life on this alien world.

The wreck also holds significant narrative weight through scattered data pads and audio logs that reveal the ship's tragic history. These records explain how an experimental engine failure led to the catastrophic crash and inadvertently released the Kharaa bacterium into the local ecosystem, triggering a biological crisis. Exploring the Cryo Chamber provides insight into the fate of the original crew, while the Bridge offers a vantage point for understanding the scale of the disaster that occurred before the player's arrival.

Despite being hazardous due to unstable structures and potential infection risks in deeper sections like the Cargo Bay, the Aurora is vital for progression. It unlocks key blueprints such as the Rebreather and Seamoth, enabling further exploration into dangerous biomes. Ignoring this site means missing critical context about the planet's danger levels and the origin of the alien threat lurking beneath the waves, making it an essential stop for any thorough survivor.
