Sand Shark

A swift, sandy predator that guards the shallow reefs of Planet 4546B.

The Sand Shark is a common, medium-sized predator found throughout the shallow and intermediate depths of Planet 4546B. Resembling terrestrial sharks with its streamlined body and dorsal fin, this creature roams the sandy plains and grassy fields, often serving as one of the first threats new survivors encounter upon crash-landing. While not the largest hunter in the ocean, its abundance and speed make it a significant obstacle for unprepared explorers.

Lore & Background

Despite being a common sight, the Sand Shark plays a crucial role in the survival loop of the planet's ecosystem. They are often seen patrolling the perimeter of kelp forests and shallow trenches. While they generally avoid larger predators like the Reaper Leviathan or Ghost Leviathan, they will aggressively defend their territory if threatened by divers or if food is scarce. Their presence indicates a healthy, albeit dangerous, food web in the upper layers of the ocean.

In Their Own Story

The water was clear and sun-dappled as I descended toward the sandy floor, my Rebreather humming softly. Suddenly, a shadow flickered against the grains below—a sleek, beige shape darting with terrifying speed. It circled me once, its dark eye unblinking, before snapping at a nearby Reef Crab. The Sand Shark was a reminder that even in the gentle shallows, nature here is ruthless and hungry.

Reader's Guide

The Sand Shark possesses a streamlined, torpedo-like body covered in rough, sand-colored scales that blend seamlessly with the ocean floor. It features a prominent dorsal fin, pectoral fins for steering, and a powerful tail used for rapid bursts of speed.

As a carnivore, it primarily hunts Reef Crabs and small fish found in shallow biomes like the Shallows and Kelp Forests. While generally neutral to divers who ignore them, they become highly aggressive if provoked, attacked, or if the player enters their personal space while holding food items.

Players can harvest Sand Shark Meat and Scales using a Knife or Seamoth Drill Arm after killing one. These resources are essential for crafting early-game equipment like the Prawn Suit's drill arm upgrades or creating food. Unlike some larger fauna, they cannot be tamed but can be lured with bait to clear specific areas.
